Pediatric Dental FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

At MV Kids Dentists & Braces, we understand that parents often have questions about their child’s dental health, development, and treatment options. Below are answers to some of the most common questions we receive from families.

When Should My Child First Visit the Dentist?

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends scheduling your child’s first dental visit by their first birthday or within six months after the first tooth appears.

Early visits help:

  • Monitor growth and development

  • Prevent cavities and dental problems

  • Build healthy habits early

  • Create positive dental experiences from a young age

What Happens During a Routine Dental Visit?

During your child’s visit, we may:

  • Examine the teeth, gums, and oral tissues

  • Evaluate growth and dental development

  • Assess cavity risk and oral hygiene

  • Perform a gentle cleaning when appropriate

  • Review brushing, flossing, and nutrition habits

  • Discuss preventive treatments such as fluoride and sealants

Our goal is to create a comfortable, educational, and positive experience for both children and parents.

How Often Should My Child Visit the Dentist?

Most children benefit from dental checkups and cleanings every six months. Regular preventive visits help us monitor oral development, identify concerns early, and maintain healthy smiles. Some children may benefit from more frequent visits depending on their individual dental needs.

Do You Accept Dental Insurance?

We are a fee-for-service practice and accept most PPO dental insurance plans. As a courtesy, we electronically submit insurance claims on your behalf to help maximize your benefits. We also offer an in-house membership program for families without dental insurance.

What Sedation Options Do You Offer?

We offer gentle sedation options to help children feel more relaxed and comfortable during treatment, including:

  • Nitrous oxide (laughing gas)

  • General anesthesia with a licensed pediatric anesthesia team

Our team will discuss the safest and most appropriate option based on your child’s individual needs.

How Can I Help My Child Feel Comfortable About the Dentist?

Children often respond best when dental visits are introduced in a calm and positive way.

We recommend:

  • Speaking positively about dental visits

  • Avoiding words that may create fear or anxiety

  • Reading children’s books about visiting the dentist

Allowing our team to guide and encourage your child during the appointment Our pediatric dental team is specially trained to help children feel safe, comfortable, and supported throughout their visit.

What Are Dental Sealants?

Dental sealants are thin protective coatings placed on the chewing surfaces of back teeth to help prevent cavities. Sealants are quick, comfortable, and highly effective for many children.

Are Digital X-Rays Safe for Children?

Yes. We use modern digital x-ray technology designed to minimize radiation exposure while helping us diagnose dental concerns safely and accurately.

Our office also incorporates advanced technology, including AI-assisted imaging support, to help provide high-quality pediatric dental care.

What If My Child Has a Dental Emergency?

If your child experiences dental pain, swelling, a broken tooth, or a dental injury, please contact our office as soon as possible. We make every effort to provide same-day emergency care whenever possible.

For severe facial injuries, difficulty breathing, or significant trauma, please seek immediate medical attention or call 911.
